N48.8bn fraud: Strike stalls Ibeto’s arraignment The nationwide strike embarked upon by labour union, on Wednesday, stalled the scheduled arraignment of the Chairman of Ibeto Energy Development Company, Cletus Ibeto, before the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja. The trial judge, Justice Ismail Ijelu, had on November 3, fixed November 15, 2023, for the defendant’s arraignment after ordering his arrest. The bench warrant issued by the court followed a motion moved by the counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), who informed him that the defendant had failed to appear in court despite hearing notices repeatedly served on him. The EFCC had charged the defendant, alongside his companies, Ibeto Energy Development Company and Odoh Holdings Limited over an alleged N4.8bn fraud. The South Korean police on Sunday announced the arrest of a South Korean connected to a multinational drug ring operating in Cambodia, Nigeria, and China , responsible for smuggling methamphetamine into South Korea. According to World KBS news, the suspect, identified solely by his surname Song and in his 50s, was taken into custody upon his deportation from Cambodia on Wednesday.  Song, who oversaw the Cambodian branch of the drug syndicate, stands accused of instructing a domestic drug distributor named Kim in March to take delivery of 20 kilogrammes of methamphetamine that Nigerian drug dealers had illicitly transported into South Korea and subsequently distributed across the nation. Additionally, Song is believed to have directed the distribution of some of the seized methamphetamine in China and Nigeria. Amid controversy trailing the appointment and confirmation of Etekamba Umoren as Resident Electoral Commissioner from Akwa Ibom State, stakeholders of the All Progressives Party, from the state, have stated that the appointee was not their member. The Senate had last week Wednesday on the strength of a request from President Bola Tinubu, confirmed appointment of Umoren as Resident Electoral Commissioner from Akwa Ibom State along with nine others. Umoren’s confirmation was, however, kicked against by some interest groups in the polity, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party on the alleged ground of being a card-carrying member of APC. In kicking against the appointment of Umoren as REC, last week Thursday, PDP through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the appointee was an APC leader who has been at the forefront of APC campaigns and has projected the party’s interests in previous elections.
